Gold Sellers Shut Shop in Protest Against Iran's New Tax Law

Gold sellers in Tehran and Tabriz downed their shutters for the past two days in protest against a new tax law passed by Iran's parliament.

The strike targets amendments to the "Capital Income Tax" law.

The changes in the law aim to get approval from the Guardian Council, after which they will be implemented soon.

The tax plan requires gold buyers and sellers to pay a tax on the profit they make from the difference between buying and selling prices.

Additionally, it mandates that gold dealers must register detailed invoices and asset information in the tax system and a tax on gold holdings exceeding 150 grams.

This is not the first protest of its kind; such strikes erupted last year when similar tax proposals were introduced.

The government downplayed the concerns back then, claiming the laws were still under review.

However, with the amendments passed and heavier taxes included in the government budget bill, gold sellers are worried again, prompting this renewed protest.
