Iran Executes 6 Prisoners, Including a Woman, at Yazd Prison
Islamic Republic's authorities have executed six prisoners, including a woman, at Yazd Central Prison, according to human rights activists.
The Hengaw Organization for Human Rights identified the individuals as Atefeh Amini, Reza Akhiri, Ali Momeni, Bahram Seyed-Nasiri, Amirhossein Hassankhani, and Fakhraddin Raei.
Amini, 35, was from Yazd. Momeni, 40, was an ethnic Lor from Borujerd in Lorestan Province. Raei, 44, originally from Tabriz, was living in Meybod. Hassankhani, 35, was from Rasht. Akhiri, 31, was from Minab, and Seyed-Nasiri, 46, was from Bandar Abbas.
Hengaw reported that Akhiri and Momeni had been imprisoned for three years on drug-related charges. Seyed-Nasiri had also been held for four years on drug charges.
Raei and Amini had each been incarcerated for five years, while Hassankhani had served four years before the executions were carried out, according to the organization.
Iran has one of the highest execution rates in the world. The Islamic Republic frequently enforces capital punishment for drug offenses, despite international criticism that such penalties violate human rights standards for non-violent crimes.
Human rights groups have also said that Iran disproportionately executes prisoners from ethnic minorities and economically disadvantaged backgrounds.
