New Petition Calls for Release of Jailed Iranian Physician
An online petition demanding the immediate release from custody of a dedicated Iranian physician who came to the aid of injured protesters during last year's protests has been launched.
Over the past year, Yaser Rahmanirad has been “at the forefront whenever there was a need for medical assistance,” the initiators of the petition said.
“Any attempt to fabricate baseless and meaningless charges will be in vain. Dr. Yaser Rahmani Rad has done nothing other than fulfilling his medical mission. It is our duty to stand by him and make efforts for his freedom.”
The petition, launched on September 24, has so far been signed by more than 180 people.
Rahmanirad was rearrested on September 21 during a dawn raid on his home in the city of Khorramabad, in western Lorestan province.
He was previously detained and released on bail in Mahabad, West Azerbaijan province, for helping victims of the Islamic Republic’s brutal crackdown on demonstrators.
The authorities later dismissed the charges against him and closed his case.
Following his release from detention, he continued to offer medical aid to protesters who suffered eye injuries inflicted by security forces.
